Trending Theme: New Prime Minister Takes Office in Sudan

In a major step towards civilian-led democratic government, on August 21, 2019, the civilian economist Abdalla Hamdok was appointed as Sudan’s transitional Prime Minister. After a military overthrow of the long-time dictator Omar al- Bashir in April 2019, the military and civilian sides have ended months of unrest and moved towards a transitional government. On August 4, civilian and military leaders signed a new constitution, which included a complex power-sharing agreement that covered a transition period over the next 39 months. Once the 39 months have passed, the country will hold general elections. During the transition period, power will be divided between three major groups: a sovereign council, a legislative body, and a cabinet. These leadership bodies will include a mix of both civilian and military members.
